Vessel sound causes hearing loss for hummingbird bobtail squid (Euprymna berryi)

چکیده

Anthropogenic activity and its associated sounds have been shown to incur adverse effects on the behaviour physiology of a wide range aquatic taxa, from marine mammals fishes. Yet, little is known about how invertebrates detect respond anthropogenic sound. The hummingbird bobtail squid ( Euprymna berryi ) has short lifespan (< 6 months), grows sexual maturity around 90 days post hatching small size 5 cm mantle length) makes species an ideal candidate examine potential sound exposure under laboratory conditions. Hearing behavioural observations were made before, during after 15 minutes vessel playback, aural sensitivity curves determined using auditory evoked potentials. A significant decrease in relative ventilation rate was observed exposure. Auditory before also examined for three different ages: juveniles, mid- late adults. Baseline audiograms indicated that there with age. All age groups showed similar, significantly decreased hearing following exposure, however recovered within two hours. Globally, become louder more persistent, therefore may be limited time these animals recover Given their ecological economic importance, cephalopods should considered management policy underwater noise owing physiology.

Ontogenetic and Experience-Dependent Changes in Defensive Behavior in Captive-Bred Hawaiian Bobtail Squid, Euprymna scolopes

Cephalopod molluscs are known for their extensive behavioral repertoire and their impressive learning abilities. Their primary defensive behaviors, such as camouflage, have received detailed study, but knowledge is limited to intensive study of relatively few species. A considerable challenge facing cephalopod research is the need to establish new models that can be captive bred, are tractable ...

Hawaiian bobtail squid

What is a bobtail squid? Euprymna scolopes (Figure 1) is a small sepiolid squid, or bobtail squid, occurring in the marine coastal environment of the Hawaiian archipelago. Whereas most other squid are always out and about, the bobtail squid buries itself in the sand during its daylight quiescent period. Then, at night, individuals of this species emerge from the sand to forage on prey, such as ...

The Role of Hemocytes in the Hawaiian Bobtail Squid, Euprymna scolopes: A Model Organism for Studying Beneficial Host–Microbe Interactions

Most, if not all, animals engage in associations with bacterial symbionts. Understanding the mechanisms by which host immune systems and beneficial bacteria communicate is a fundamental question in the fields of immunology and symbiosis. The Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes) engages in two known symbioses; a binary relationship with the light organ symbiont Vibrio fischeri, and a bacte...
